As of April 15, 2026, domestic LPG cylinder prices remain unchanged at the rates set in March. However, commercial LPG prices were hiked significantly from April 1, in response to a 44% spike in Saudi Contract Price — from $542 per tonne in March to $780 per tonne in April. The Iran war's disruption to Hormuz has made the global LPG supply chain extremely tight, and India is feeling the pressure acutely.

Oil marketing companies are currently absorbing an under-recovery of Rs 380 per cylinder by holding domestic LPG prices steady. India's domestic LPG rate remains among the lowest in the region — Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal all pay more. Beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) — over 10 crore low-income households — continue to receive subsidies via Direct Benefit Transfer.

The supply situation is under close watch. India imports more than 90% of its LPG from West Asian countries, primarily Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The first LPG vessel to successfully cross Hormuz since the war began — the India-flagged Green Asha, carrying 15,400 tonnes of LPG — docked at JNPA (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority) on April 10, providing some relief. India is also diversifying LPG import sources, with the US emerging as a major new supplier since the conflict began displacing West Asian routes.

CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) prices in India have remained stable through April at Rs 80.50/kg in Mumbai, with similar rates in other major cities. The CNG price has been unchanged since September 2025 in most networks. Unlike LPG, CNG distribution is a domestic pipeline-based system, making it less directly exposed to the Hormuz disruption — though upstream gas pricing remains tied to global markets.

The government has prioritised Piped Natural Gas (PNG) for households and CNG for transport. Industrial and commercial PNG users had allocations reduced to 80% of average consumption during peak supply tightness, though this is being managed. The government has also doubled the daily quota of 5-kg market-priced LPG cylinders (available at Rs 549 in Delhi) at distributorships as a supplement for workers and low-income users who cannot access the subsidised 14.2-kg network easily.

The Ministry of Petroleum has urged consumers not to panic-buy and confirmed adequate stocks at distributor level. Over 56,000 LPG cylinders have been seized from black-market operators since the war began, according to government data.
