Wednesday, April 15, 2026. The Central Board of Secondary Education declared the Class 10 board exam results — and this year, it came earlier than any previous year. That is because of a structural change in how CBSE conducts exams. The result is also one of the cleanest data pictures the board has released in years.
The Top-Line Numbers
A total of 24,71,777 students from India and abroad appeared in the CBSE Class 10 exams 2026. Out of them, 23,16,008 passed with a national pass percentage of 93.70%, slightly higher than 93.66% recorded in 2025.
So over 24.7 lakh students sat for this exam. 93.7% cleared it. That is 23.16 lakh students.
A total of 45,516 students, representing 1.92% of all candidates, scored above 95% in the CBSE Class 10 exams 2026. Moreover, 1,99,944 students (8.43%) scored over 90%.

Let's put that in perspective. Over 45,000 students cleared 95% or above. That's more than the entire population of many towns. And just under 2 lakh students crossed the 90% threshold.
Year-by-Year Comparison
The trend is clear and consistent:
- 2023: 93.12% pass rate
- 2024: 93.60% pass rate
- 2025: 93.66% pass rate
- 2026: 93.70% pass rate
CBSE has been steadily improving pass rates over the past four years. The 2026 figure is the highest yet, though the margin of improvement is small — just 0.04 percentage points over last year.
Category-Wise Performance
Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) emerged as the best-performing school category in the CBSE Class 10 Result 2026, recording a 99.57% pass rate. Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) followed closely with 99.42%. Among other school categories, government schools recorded 91.43%, government-aided schools 91.01%, while private schools stood at 93.77%.
The gap between central government schools (KV at 99.57%) and state-run government schools (91.43%) is significant — over 8 percentage points. That gap reflects differences in teacher availability, infrastructure, and resource allocation. Central schools consistently outperform because of uniform staffing policies and guaranteed funding.
Students from CBSE-affiliated schools abroad recorded a 99.10% pass rate. Children With Special Needs (CWSN) appeared strongly, with 9,443 students appearing and 9,088 passing — a 96.24% pass rate. 452 CWSN students scored above 90%, and 91 scored above 95%.
The CWSN figure deserves attention. A 96.24% pass rate for students with special needs, with 91 clearing the 95% threshold, is a strong indicator that inclusive education systems are beginning to deliver results in CBSE schools.
What Changed This Year: The Dual Exam System
CBSE introduced a dual examination system for Class 10 in 2026, in line with the National Education Policy. The first examination was conducted as the main exam, and a second is scheduled later. If a student is not satisfied with their score, they will be allowed to appear in the Improvement Exam scheduled in May, with results in June.
This is a significant policy shift. Under the old system, a student who scored poorly had to wait a full year to reappear. Under the new dual system, they can reattempt within weeks. Students who failed can appear in the Compartment category. Students who passed but want to improve can appear in up to three subjects.
The first phase of Class 10 — the Main Exam — was conducted from February 17 to March 6, 2026. Students were required to appear in at least three subjects in the main examination.
This is also why the result came in April instead of May, which was the usual pattern. The board needed to release Phase 1 results before Phase 2 registrations could open.
When Is the Class 12 Result?
The CBSE Class 12 result 2026 is expected to be released in May 2026.
Class 12 results are critical for college admissions, especially for engineering and medical streams where cutoffs for JEE, NEET, and university admissions are determined partly on the basis of board marks.
How to Check Results
Students can access their results through:
- cbseresults.nic.in (official results portal)
- cbse.gov.in (main board website)
- DigiLocker (digital document repository)
- UMANG app
- SMS: Students can text their roll number to a designated CBSE number
The DigiLocker option is important — it provides a legally valid digital marksheet that is accepted by most colleges for admission forms.
No Merit List This Year
CBSE has not released a Merit List or Class 10 Toppers names. This policy, which CBSE adopted a few years ago to reduce academic pressure on students, remains in place. The board believes that ranking students publicly creates unnecessary anxiety and does not serve educational outcomes.
What Students Who Scored Poorly Should Do
With the dual exam system now in place:
- Compartment students (failed in one subject): Register for the Phase 2 exam in May
- Students who passed but want to improve: Eligible to reattempt up to three subjects in the Improvement Exam
- Phase 2 results: Expected June 2026
The key advice: do not wait. Registration windows for both Compartment and Improvement exams open quickly after result declaration. Check the official CBSE website within 48 hours.
