On Thursday evening, April 16, 2026, Wipro announced what its board has described as the company's largest-ever share buyback — worth Rs 15,000 crore. The announcement came alongside Wipro's Q4 FY26 earnings, and it sent a clear message to investors: the company is confident about its financial health and wants to return cash to shareholders.
For retail investors, this is the kind of announcement that demands attention. A buyback at a premium is a direct, immediate way to make money — if you hold shares and participate. But there are conditions, proportions, and timelines you need to understand before acting.

Wipro's board of directors, on Thursday April 16, announced the company's largest-ever share buyback proposal worth Rs 15,000 crore, offering stock market investors Rs 250 per share for the repurchasing deal, according to an exchange filing.
What is Share buyback and Why companies do it?
A share buyback is when a company uses its own cash to buy back shares from the market or from shareholders. Think of it this way: instead of paying a dividend, the company is saying "here is your money back, in exchange for some of your shares." This reduces the total number of shares in circulation, which generally makes each remaining share slightly more valuable.
Companies do buybacks for a few reasons. First, when the management believes the stock is undervalued, buying back shares is a direct investment in itself. Second, it returns excess cash to shareholders efficiently. Third, it reduces the equity base, which can improve metrics like earnings per share (EPS).
Wipro's CFO Aparna Iyer said it clearly: "We have continued to invest in our clients, capabilities and people and maintained our margins in narrow band. Our cash conversion continues to remain strong with operating cash flows at 112.6% of net income for FY26."
WIPRO's Financial Health?
According to the balance sheet as of March 31, 2026, Wipro had cash and cash equivalents worth Rs 26,778 crore. A Rs 15,000 crore buyback uses just over half of that cash. The company is not stretching.
However, this buyback is slightly below what the market expected. Overseas brokerage firms including Morgan Stanley and Investec were expecting Wipro to go for a Rs 16,000–18,500 crore buyback, considering its cash-rich status. That gap explains why the stock reaction post-announcement was muted rather than euphoric.
On the earnings front: Wipro recorded a 2% fall in net profit to Rs 3,502 crore in Q4 FY26 compared to the same period a year ago. However, its revenue from core operations rose 8% to Rs 24,236 crore in the March quarter.
Wipro's Buyback History
- 2020: Rs 9,500 crore buyback at Rs 400 per share
- 2023: Rs 12,000 crore buyback at Rs 445 per share (previous record)
- 2026: Rs 15,000 crore buyback at Rs 250 per share (new record)
Note that the 2026 buyback price (Rs 250) is lower than 2023 (Rs 445) because Wipro issued a 1:1 bonus issue in late 2024 — doubling the share count and halving the per-share price proportionally.
Should Retail Investors Participate?
The tender offer route means you can tender your shares to Wipro at Rs 250. With the stock trading at around Rs 210, the arithmetic is straightforward: there is a ~19% immediate gain on shares you can tender. The catch is proportionality — not everyone who tenders will have all their shares accepted. The 9 crore shares reserved for retail investors will be allocated proportionately among all retail participants.
