Toyota sold more Fortuners in October 2025 than Honda sold Elevates — a car that costs Rs 20–30 lakh less. That single data point tells you why the next-generation Fortuner matters far beyond just the auto industry. In India, the Fortuner is not just a vehicle; it is a benchmark. And the fact that its current avatar, launched in 2015 and facelifted in 2020, is still outselling newer rivals is both a tribute to brand loyalty and a reminder that its competition is catching up fast. The next-gen Fortuner is Toyota's answer to that threat.
Based on camouflaged spy shots from Thailand, where the Fortuner is manufactured, along with confirmations tied to the recently launched new-generation Toyota Hilux (which shares its platform), here is what buyers can expect when the new Fortuner arrives.
Platform: Same Foundation, Better Engineering
The next Fortuner will not shift to a new architecture. It continues on an updated version of the IMV (Innovative Multi-Purpose Vehicle) ladder-frame chassis — the same platform that underpins the new Hilux. What changes is the engineering on top. The revised platform is tuned for improved ride comfort, sharper steering response, and better off-road handling. For Indian buyers who use the Fortuner both as a city daily driver and a highway cruiser, this is the most meaningful improvement — the current car's suspension is stiff and dated by 2026 standards.
Exterior Design: Sharper, Wider, More Aggressive
The spy shots reveal a wider stance and more upright silhouette compared to the outgoing model. Expect slimmer LED headlamps with a redesigned daytime running light signature, a taller and more polygonal front grille (similar in direction to the new Hilux), more pronounced wheel arches, and revised tail lamps. The overall direction is sharper and more contemporary while keeping the boxy, muscular identity that Fortuner loyalists expect. This will be the most significant visual overhaul since the model launched in 2015.
Interior: Finally, the Big Upgrade
This is where the 2026 Fortuner makes its biggest leap. The outgoing model is widely criticised for an interior that feels out of step with its asking price. The new one addresses this directly.
- Dual 12.3-inch Screens: One for infotainment (replacing the outdated 8-inch unit) and one as a fully digital instrument cluster
- Wireless Connectivity: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging pad on higher variants
- 64-color Ambient Lighting: First time in the Fortuner's history — zones cover footwells, door sills, HVAC vents, and center console
- Ventilated Leather Seats: Standard on top-spec Legender variant
- 360-degree Camera System: For parking and off-road navigation
- Physical Controls Retained: Toyota has kept 12 dedicated physical buttons for key functions like HVAC and hazard lights — informed by user research showing preference for tactile controls in off-road situations
- Electronic Parking Brake: Replaces the mechanical handbrake
- Over-the-Air (OTA) Updates: Software and map updates via connected infotainment
Toyota adds ADAS in the Fortuner
The absence of a proper Advanced Driver Assistance System has been one of the current Fortuner's most glaring gaps, especially as rivals like the Skoda Kodiaq and Jeep Meridian come equipped with it. The new model changes this. Level-2 ADAS is expected across higher variants, covering adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, pre-collision braking, highway driving assist, and blind-spot monitoring. This is the Toyota Safety Sense package deployed in other global Toyota products, now finally making its way to the Fortuner.
Powertrain: Familiar Engines, Mild-Hybrid Additions
Toyota is not reinventing the mechanical package here. The proven 2.8-litre, 4-cylinder turbodiesel continues as the core offering for India — it currently produces 201 bhp and 500 Nm of torque. What changes is the addition of a 48V mild-hybrid system (referred to in some promotional materials as "Fortuner Drive 48V") that adds approximately 14 bhp and 64 Nm, improves fuel efficiency by an estimated 7.5 percent, and supports regenerative braking. The 2.7-litre petrol engine is also expected to continue on global markets. Both manual and automatic transmissions remain, as do 2WD and 4WD options. A full hybrid variant is possible in later years of the model cycle, but unlikely at Indian launch.
Competition and Pricing
By the time the new Fortuner reaches India in the second half of 2026 or early 2027 — it will face a different competitive landscape than the outgoing model did. The Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Tayron are both positioned in the same segment. The MG Majestor has entered as a challenger. The Hyundai Palisade is also expected. Given the comprehensive upgrades, a price increase of Rs 1–2 lakh over current variants is widely expected. The current Fortuner starts at around Rs 33 lakh (ex-showroom). The new model will likely begin at Rs 35–36 lakh, with the fully loaded Legender pushing past Rs 50 lakh.
Toyota has not confirmed an official reveal date. The global debut is most likely between mid and late 2026. India launch, based on Toyota's typical regional rollout pattern, should follow within a few months of the global reveal — pointing toward Diwali 2026 as a plausible window, though early 2027 cannot be ruled out.
