Porsche unveiled something this week that the automotive world has been asking for years: a convertible 911 GT3. It goes by the name GT3 S/C — the S/C standing for Sport Cabriolet — and it was revealed on April 14, 2026, at an event in Atlanta, by Porsche Cars North America.
For context: the 911 GT3 has existed in its current form as the track-focused, naturally aspirated, high-revving version of Porsche's legendary sports car. It has always come as a hardtop. Drivers who wanted open-air motoring in the 911 lineup had options — the Cabriolet, the Targa — but none with the GT3's focused performance character. The GT3 S/C is the only open-top variant in the current 911 range that is also a pure two-seater, reminiscent of the 911 Speedster from 2019.
What Makes the GT3 S/C Special
The heart of the car is unchanged: the GT3 S/C is fitted with the same 4.0-litre, six-cylinder engine as the GT3 coupé, producing 510 PS of power, with a top speed of 313 km/h (194 mph). It accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds.
That 0.7 second difference from the hardtop GT3's 3.2 seconds is the price you pay for the convertible mechanism and the additional structural reinforcement the open body requires. But for most people who will actually own this car, the 3.9 second 0-100 time on a winding country road with the roof down is not a compromise — it is the entire point.
The GT3 S/C is available exclusively with the short-ratio and lightweight six-speed GT Sport manual transmission. No PDK automatic option exists. This is a deliberate, principled decision by Porsche. They could have offered PDK for better 0-60 numbers. They chose not to. The message is clear: this car is for people who want to drive, not be driven.
The roof itself is technically remarkable. It uses a fully automated fabric top that opens and closes in 12 seconds at speeds up to 50 km/h (about 31 mph). Unlike the manual tent-style top on the 911 Speedster, this is a fully motorised system. The roof frame uses magnesium structural components to save weight.
Lightweight Engineering
Porsche engineers faced a fundamental engineering challenge: add a convertible roof mechanism to a car that is already engineered to extreme weight targets, without compromising the handling character.
The car weighs 1,497 kilograms — only 30 kilograms more than the previous-generation 991 Speedster, and about 66 pounds more than the Speedster. Getting there required extreme measures. The bonnet, front wings, and doors are all made from carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP), carried over from the 911 S/T. The anti-roll bars and shear plate are also CFRP. Standard-fit Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) save unsprung mass. Even the standard lead-acid battery was replaced with a compact 40 Ah lithium-ion unit, saving 4 kilograms.
The GT3 S/C is not a limited-edition model — unlike the Speedster and the S/T. It will be available on an ongoing production basis. This is significant. Limited-edition Porsches immediately enter speculation territory — dealers mark them up, speculators buy to flip, genuine enthusiasts get priced out. An ongoing production model means real drivers can actually own one.
The Chassis and Suspension
This is the first 911 convertible to use a double-wishbone suspension at the front axle. The chassis has been tuned to echo the 911 GT3 coupé with the Touring Package — meaning it is somewhat softer in character than the hard-core GT3 Weissach-optioned track weapon, but still sharply focused compared to the regular 911 Carrera.
The car also comes with rear-axle steering with sport setup, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) with sport setup, and a ride height lowered by approximately 20mm compared with the standard 911 Carrera. Power Steering Plus and PCCB come as standard.
Price and Availability
The 2027 Porsche 911 GT3 S/C carries a US MSRP of $273,000 excluding the $2,350 delivery fee. Arrival in US Porsche Centers is expected by fall 2026. Orders are open now.
For the Australian market, pricing starts at $588,500 before on-road costs. Indian pricing has not been officially confirmed, but given the 911 GT3 coupé's Indian price (approximately Rs 3.25 crore), the GT3 S/C is expected to come in north of Rs 4 crore when it arrives in India, plus import duties.
The Optional Street Style Package
For buyers who want personalisation beyond Porsche's standard palette, a Street Style Package is optionally available for the first time on this model. It includes Pyro Red badging, a laminated walnut gear lever knob, a Pyro Red shift gate, and perforated Race-Tex inner roof lining with a Porsche crest outline graphic. It is the kind of detail that makes a car feel personal rather than generic.
Why This Car Matters
The 911 GT3 S/C is not a car most people will ever own. But its existence matters to the automotive world for what it represents: Porsche's commitment to building cars that prioritise driving engagement over everything else. In an era when most performance cars are going turbocharged, electric, and increasingly automated, the GT3 S/C says: manual gearbox, naturally aspirated flat-six, 9,000 RPM redline, wind in your hair.
Porsche's 911 sales hit a record of 51,583 units in 2025, and through the first three months of 2026, the 911 is up 22% compared to the same period last yea..The market is clearly responding to exactly what this car represents.
